'Former AWB member shows no remorse' (11.11.09)

A former AWB member who wants to be pardoned for a politically motivated offence has come under fire for his perceived lack of remorse.

Ryan Albutt was convicted and sentenced for his part in an attack in Kuruman, in the Northern Cape, in 1995 in which one person was killed.

In March, the South Gauteng High Court stopped the president from granting pardons to perpetrators of political violence without first consulting the relevant victims.

Albutt has now turned to the Constitutional Court to have the decision overturned.

This is being opposed by a number of rights organisations, including the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation.

Geoff Budlender, acting for the NGOs, saID Albutt did not care about the plight of the victims.

"When the NGOs say what about the views of the victims, they say the victims do not matter. The views of the victims are irrelevant," saID Budlender.
