Ministry of Police
Cabinet has approved the report on the study of the violent nature of crime in South Africa for tabling in Parliament.
Cabinet commissioned the report in 2007. It sought to answer the question why crime in South Africa is characterised by high levels of violence.
The study was conducted by the centre for the study of violence and reconciliation.
The report has been with the justice, crime prevention and security cluster.
In a separate statement issued by the ministry of police, the police minister, Nathi Mthethwa, welcomed the approval. He stated that this would pave the way for public comment on the report in the next few weeks.
Consequently, the department would now spearhead a consultative process with all stakeholders involved in the fight against crime.
The statement adds that the ministry will meet with the national assembly's police committee on 9 November to discuss the report.
Following this meeting, the report will be released for public comment.
The minister emphasised that a review of current legislation and operational frameworks would be considered if the report comes up with clear evidence of what causes high levels of violence.
